The Compression Point / 03
Meaning
Meaning begins when a difference becomes consequential to the continuation of an organised system.
The proposition
Meaning begins where a difference can alter what happens next.
The world is full of differences, but not every difference means something to every system. Meaning appears when variation is taken up within an organisation and changes its possible continuation.
This makes meaning relational rather than free-floating. It lies neither in a signal alone nor entirely in an observer, but in the structured encounter between world, system and consequence. As systems acquire memory, abstraction and models of absent things, that relation gains depth without losing its biological ground.
The operation
Three movements.
One continuing structure.
Something varies
A change, pattern or absence becomes available to a system capable of distinguishing it.
The difference enters a structure
Its significance depends upon the receiving system, its history, its organisation and its present context.
The possible future changes
Meaning becomes visible in what the system preserves, predicts, chooses, avoids or acts upon.
What follows
Semantic depth may have a discoverable geometry
If meaning depends upon relations that can be preserved, distorted, detached and recombined, semantic systems may occupy a structured space. We can begin to compare them by context sensitivity, invariance, stakes and their capacity to model what is absent—including themselves.
Meaning is the shape a difference takes inside the future of a system.
